Drona - Movie Review

I think I am going to write this review a little differently. First of all I need to say a few things. Over the last few weeks on the Radio, I have been making jokes about Drona...laughing at a Superhero who needs a bodyguard...a bodyguard who in real life is scared of horses...ALL THAT STOPS NOW...less then 20 mins ago I watched Drona...and I must say...I felt an electric buzz after the end credits. I have not waited till the last credit rolls in donkeys years. So...since I loved the movie so much I am going to write a few letters to a few people.

Letter 1

Dear Abhishek Bachchan and Goldie Behl,

I am sorry for all the jokes over the last few weeks...when I saw the promos of Drona, I thought that you guys downloaded the Mummy 3 graphics making software from the internet and make a superhero movie. I am sorry for all the jokes about Drona wearing a sherwani. I was wrong. I felt proud today when I was watching your movie.

Kind Regards,
Rohit Jayakaran

Letter 2

Dear Superman, Spiderman and Batman,

You wooses. Don't you guys feel ashamed when you run around in tights with a chaddi over your tights. Really guys...and what’s with the cape...ok spidy...not you...but the other two wooses wear capes...and tights and chaddis...really guys...get with it. And spidy...really bro...we get that you were bitten by a spider and all that...I would recommend going to the doctor...please stop wearing that tight costume with a mask...please...guys....GROW UP.

Kind Regards,

Rohit Jayakaran

Letter 3

Dear Joker, Lex Luthor and Other Evil men who fight with me in tights.

Guys, stop bugging those wooses...fight a REAL SUPERHERO...DRONA.

Kind Regards,

Rohit Jayakaran

Letter 4

Dear Drona Sir,

Sorry for the jokes...you make me proud to be an Indian. I can't wait to watch your second adventure. I must confess you have chosen your bodyguard wisely...she is a bodyguard and does one hell of an item number. If you are ever in Dubai, please come to my house for chai paani.

Kind Regards,

Rohit Jayakaran

That’s it...go watch the movie, keep and open mind and you will enjoy it. This movie has opened new doors in Indian cinema. oh...one more letter...

Dear Hollywood,

Bite me!!!

Kind Regards,

Rohit Jayakaran

I rate the movie ****.* - 4.5 out of 5 stars...its a MUST WATCH.

Mumbai Meri Jaan - Movie Review

Its interesting that Mumbai Meri Jaan released so close to A Wednesday. They both deal with similar stories. Mumbai Meri Jaan is a very real story about how people deal with the aftermath of terrorism.

What I liked about the film was the fact that once again you have ACTORS and not STARS who are part of the film. This means that you will see great acting and feel the emotions of an actor even without them saying anything. Soha Ali Khan performs her role very well and I felt her pain during the film.

I am a little disappointed that this movie has not done as well as I had hoped it would have. The reason is perhaps two-fold. I think that not many people are willing to invest good money in a good film. Perhaps if this film had the backing of say an Aamir Khan Productions, it would have got noticed. I am sure Aamir would have been proud to be a part of this movie. The second reason I think that the film did not do well was the title. I think as a NON-Mumbaikar I am immune to titles like "Mumbai Meri Jaan". I think I ignore movies like this thinking..."This will be about Mumbai". Honestly the movie is NOT about Mumbai...its about PEOPLE.

I would rate the movie a GOOD WATCH - ***.* - 3.5 out of 5 stars. (Buy the DVD when it is out.)

A Wednesday - Movie Review

Now here is a movie that will make you stop and take note. The best thing about this movie is the fact that all the actors are actors and NOT stars. This means that you will get to see actors who interpret a great screenplay and make a great movie that will make you think for sure.

The movie is a story of just one day in Mumbai and as the title suggests, it is A Wednesday. Everything that happens starts and finishes on that very same day. You are left guessing right till the end of the movie and the end will make you rethink your life. I am not going into more detail because I would rather not give away the plot of the movie or its ending. What I will say though is, just go and watch the movie. I think this movie makes me feel much like I felt after I watched Rang De Basanti...

I rate the movie a MUST WATCH - **** - 4 out of 5 stars.

Saas Bahu aur Sensex - Movie Review

I would like to say, this movie changes the way you look at the world...this movie inspires women to be independent...but who am I kidding. This movie is such a waste of your AED 30 that I have decided that I will tell you what I could have productively spent time on than waste it watching Saas Bahu Aur Sensex.

1. I could have spent AED 30 and picked up a tweezer and could have plucked out individual hairs one by one from my beard until I was clean shaven...(That would have been more fun than Saas Bahu Aur Sensex).

2. I could have spent AED 30 to heard out of Dubai to the desert and opened a shop selling sand to passers by...(That would have been more fun than Saas Bahu Aur Sensex).

3. I could have spent AED 30 buying 4 - 25 liter huge water containers which I could have used then to reduce the salt levels in the Dead Sea in Jordan...(That would have been more fun than Saas Bahu Aur Sensex).

If you are still not convinced NOT to watch Saas Bahu Aur Sensex, may I suggest a few people who I don't get along with who you can take to the theatre with you??? Can I?

Don't watch the movie...just give your AED 30 to charity...or me...really. The film has such BAD ACTING...BAD Meaning BAD. Farooq Shaikh is the only great performance...but that is just worth AED 8...I should have negotiated and bargained at the Box Office.

I will be kind and rate the film as SOMETHING YOU WISH FOR YOUR WORST ENEMIES - * 1 out of 5 stars.

Chamku - Movie Review

Ok, let me honest about this...Chamku seems like a copy of some movie...I just don't know which one. The film stars Bobby Deol and Priyanka Chopra. While I must say Priyanka looks cute in parts of the movie, Bobby has all but ONE LOOK in the film. For some reason his acting reminds me of Zoolander...you know when Zoolander is giving different emotions and looks for the camera but they are all the same. Really Bobby...a smile would not kill anyone.

The director on his part however has been able to make it SEEM like Bobby Deol has different emotions in the film but having to place cameras to cover different angles of his non-existent emotions.

The film is more like a run of the mill Bollywood story. There are a few twists and turns but you know what will happen in the end. Oh yes...I got it...its a copy of that Hollywood movie in which normal people are picked up from the streets and trained to be killers...ok...I give it...I can't remember the name...but does it matter.

I rate the film a WATCH IF REALLY BORED - **.* 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Welcome to Sajjanpur - Movie Review

Every once in a while there comes a story that just makes you feel good. A story where you fall in love with the characters. A story in which you feel what the character is going through and know that you would exhibit the same short comings if you were in their place. Welcome to Sajjanpur is a story that will do all of that to you and a lot more. The movie made me want to take out some paper and write a letter to my friends. (Alas, I would need to email them to get their address and for some reason most people these days ask you twice why you need their address)

The story is simple, Shreyas Thalpade write letters in a village to make a living. This is the story of his adventures. At a time when most main stream Bollywood movies concentrate of Special Effects and Item numbers, this movie is a welcome break. For me the most endearing thing was the fact that Shreyas charges Rs.2 per page for a letter her rights. The innocence of rural India will get you.

Watch the movie, you won'd regret it.

I rate the movie a MUST WATCH ***.* 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Rock On - Movie Review

Rock On is one of those movies that will change the way you look at Rock Music. The movie will remind you of when you were in College...the friends...the fights...everything.

The movie is all about following your dreams and doing what you really want to in life. Once you have watched the movie you will fall in love with the music. If you have never watched a movie more than once, look forward to that record being broken. After a really long time I have actually watched a movie more than once in a theatre.

I would rate the movie as a MUST WATCH - ***** (4/5 stars)
